How to Grow
Sow the New Zealand Flax in well-drained and medium-moisture soil. Plant in a part-shade to full-sun location. When in severe frost the leaves will have a glazed look and they will roll up. The plants may look like they are dead, but do not fear, they are not. If this happens to your plants, simply cut them down to the ground at the end of February and they will re-grow by March.

Native to New Zealand, Phormium tenax grows large tufts of broad, sword-shaped, stiffly ascending leaves. It does best in moderate climates and is a perfect companion for palms, bamboos and tree ferns. It is extremely tolerant of wind and can take coastal exposure as well as light freezes. The Purple New Zealand Flax may take a while to grow from seeds, but it will be worth your efforts.
