Hardy Ground Cover
How To Grow
Sedum has very tiny seeds which are best sown by mixing with a fine sand. If sowing indoors, pre-moisten a sterile starter mix and surface sow the mixture of seed and sand. Sow 6-8 weeks before the last expected frost, and press into the soil without covering. Keep seeds moist until germination, which will occur in 14-28 days under proper conditions. Once seedlings are established, transplant them outdoors after frost season has passed. Established plants can be divided every 3-4 years for best performance.
- Environment: full sun to partial shade
- Soil: well-drained with pH 6.8-7.2
- Sowing rate: 1000 seeds to 20 sq. ft.
Plant Specifications
Sedum Stoloniferum is a succulent perennial that is native to the Middle East and grows in USDA zones 6 through 9. It is resistant to both deer and rabbits, and makes for an excellent ground cover. Sedum is quite drought tolerant and grows well in soils that would otherwise discourage plant growth.

Sedum (Sedum Stoloniferum) - Every garden has a space for this unique Sedum ground cover plant. Start Sedum Stoloniferum seeds for these pink, star-shaped flowers on trailing plants that spread by stolons. Due to this fact, this Sedum is commonly referred to as Stolon Stonecrop. Sedum Stonecrop is a succulent ground cover, and it holds moisture in its thick, fleshy leaves making it drought tolerant and hardy. This variety of Sedum ground cover grows up to 8 inches tall and can be grown in full sun or partial shade in dry, well-draining, even rocky soils. Stolon Stonecrop is fairly resistant to rabbits.
Sedum has tiny seeds which should be mixed with fine sand for an even sowing. Sow Sedum seeds indoors 6 - 8 weeks before the last frost is expected. Use small pots or flats and sterile starter mix. Pre-moisten the starter mix and sow Sedum ground cover seeds on the surface. Press the Stonecrop seeds into the moistened soil, and do not cover them. Keep the seeds moist but not saturated until they germinate. Water from the underside of the pots or use a spray bottle and lightly mist the seeds. Plant the Sedum seedlings outdoors once sufficient growth has been made. Established plants can be divided every 3 - 4 years for best performance.
