Rock Cress (Arabis caucasica Little Treasure Deep Rose) - Rock Cress is a drought tolerant, widely planted perennial rock garden plant used for a bright Spring showing of flowers. This selection forms a mounding cushion of gray-green leaves, bearing masses of fragrant, small, vibrant rose flowers from early to mid Spring. All arabis plants require good drainage, particularly in the winter months. Shear plants lightly after blooming in order to maintain a bushy, compact habit. Deer and rabbits tend to avoid rock cress.
Rock cress is a very vibrant, ground covering, mat-forming and tough plant that will grow anywhere.
Common Questions
Is Rock Cress low maintenance?
Yes, rock cress is generally considered low maintenance once established.
Are Rock Cress deer resistant?
Yes, rock cress is often considered deer resistant due to its strong fragrance.
Why are my plants not bloom well?
Insufficient sunlight, improper pruning or overcrowding can all lead to a lower number of blooms. Deadheading spent blooms will encourage a longer bloom season, dividing overcrowded plants will give your plants room to thrive and make sure they are in an area of your garden with at least 6 hours of sunlight per day.
Can I grow in containers?
Yes, choose a container with good drainage and fill container with well-draining potting mix. As plants grow, they may need to be repotted in larger container.

Rock Cress (Aubrieta Hybrida Whitewell Gem) - Grow this terrific perennial from Aubrieta seeds. Aubrieta Whitewell Gem, commonly known as Rock Cress, is an extremely popular rock garden plant and a familiar sight in the spring garden. It forms a low cushion of evergreen leaves, literally smothered by flowers for several months. This Rock Cress variety has flowers in various shades of purple to violet, over grey-green leaves. These ground cover plants should be trimmed lightly immediately after blooming, to encourage a thick mounding habit. Rock Cress plants are an excellent choice for a rock garden in sun or partial shade, growing over rock walls, or in alpine troughs, containers, or in mass plantings for a flowering ground cover. Aubrieta plants do take light foot traffic.
Sow Aubrieta ground cover seed indoors 6 - 8 weeks before the last expected frost date. Use starter trays using a sterilized mix. Press the Rock Cress seeds into the soil and thinly cover. The Aubrieta seeds need light to germinate. Transplant into the garden 12 inches apart after frost danger has passed. After frost season has passed, Rock Cress ground cover seeds can be directly sown into a prepared seedbed outdoors.
