Dianthus (Dianthus Plumarius Sonata) - This variety is a cool weather perennial. Sweetly clove-scented flowers have a velvety or satiny sheen. Colors include: pink, rose, red, and white in pure flowers with distinctively marked eyes or frosting. Dianthus Plumarius Sonata is a double-flowered mix this is short enough to be used as a flowering ground cover. It establishes readily from Dianthus flower seeds, and it will attract bees and butterflies into the garden.
Dianthus Cottage Pinks, also called Cottage Pink or Grass pink, are used in borders and rock gardens. Smaller types make excellent ground cover plants, and are good in containers. All make exceptional cut flowers. Most need alkaline soils and cool growing conditions without heat and humidity. In hot summer areas, plant in partial afternoon shade. Cut back or shear after bloom for repeat bloom.
For early blooms, sow Dianthus ground cover seeds indoors 6 - 8 weeks before frost season is over. Use sterile starter mix and sow seeds on the surface. Barely cover Dianthus seeds with soil. Transplant seedlings outdoors when temperatures have warmed. Or, directly sow ground cover seeds outdoors into prepared soil after frost season has passed. Lightly cover Dianthus seeds 1/16 inch and keep them moist until germination.
