Purslane Rock (Calandrinia Umbelleta) - For a lovely ornamental herb, start Purslane seeds and enjoy the long-blooming flowers. There are not too many herb plants that love the heat, but Rock Purslane loves heat and sun. The Rock Purslane plant has a mounding habit. With the mounding growth habit and heat tolerance, the Rock Purslane plant makes an excellent choice for a rock garden or as a bedding plant. It is also known as Red Maids, and it is a member of the Portulaca family. The Red Maids plant has the rubbery, blue-green succulent foliage as its more widely-used cousin, and the flowers also resemble Portulaca, but appear at the end of long stems for a much taller, more upright habit.
How To Grow Rock Purslane From Herb Seeds: Sow these Purslane seeds directly outdoors in the late winter or early spring. The herb seeds germinate best with cool temperatures. If you want to start the Rock Purslane seeds indoors, mix the herb seeds with dampened peat moss and place the peat moss/seed mixture in the refrigerator for 4 weeks before sowing. If your herb garden suffers during hot, dry summers, Calandrinia Ruby Tuesday is your answer!
