Gazania (Gazania Rigens New Day Mix) - Grow some Gazania seeds for both you and your neighbors! You will both appreciate these sun-loving Gazania plants that bloom profusely and add a wide array of color to flower beds or containers! Also called Treasure Flower, Gazania plants look wonderful grouped in clusters for a mass bedding ground cover or pot Treasure Flowers in hanging baskets or in patio containers.
Gazania rigens is a native of South Africa that is easy and fun to grow. It needs full sun and soil that drains well. Treasure Flowers are known to re-seed, and they bloom profusely from summer through fall in cooler climates and fall, winter and spring in hot climates. This Gazania mix has blooms in solid colors from bright yellow to orange, red, pink and white, or in wild color combinations with splashy stripes or rings of contrasting colors.
If growing Gazania seeds in colder climates, start the flower seeds indoors 6 - 8 weeks before the last expected frost. Treasure Flower seeds should be pressed into the soil but not covered and kept moist but not saturated until germination occurs. After germination of the flower seeds, reduce watering and grow seedlings in a sunny window location. For warm climates, start the Gazania seeds directly outdoors in a prepared seedbed. Space the ground cover seed 8 - 12 inches apart in the seedbed.
Gazania care includes deadheading the spent flowers to promote the growth of more blooms. Also, Gazania plants benefit from an application of a balanced liquid fertilizer every other week during the growing season or mix in a slow-release fertilizer at the time of transplanting or preparing the seedbed. Water Gazania Treasure Flower plants slowly and deeply and let them dry out in-between waterings as they are quite drought tolerant. Applying an organic mulch around the base of the Gazania plants helps to hold moisture in.
Common Questions
Do gazania flowers close up at night?
The flowers are light-sensitive and don't open at night or on cloudy, overcast days.
Do I need to deadhead my gazania flowers?
If you don’t want them to self-seed you will want to deadhead. Deadheading will also encourage a longer bloom season.
Do gazanias come back every year?
Yes, gazanias are perennial and should come back every year in USDA zones 9-11, assuming the plant is healthy.
Can I encourage more blooms with gazania flowers?
Yes, make sure they are planted in enough sunlight and fertilize regularly during the bloom season. Do not allow the soil to dry out for too long if you want to keep your plants blooming.
